Ladies slippers (Wiki) are popular casual footwear for both indoors as well as outdoors. Ladies slippers come in various styles and designs but it basically revolves around a sole that that is secured to the wearers foot by a strap. The strap on ladies slippers is usually located at the front of the slipper. They used to be traditionally worn indoors but with different fashion ideas floating around, they are sometimes used for outdoors.
They are comfortable and are very light. Most of the time however, they are made from soft fabrics design to pamper your feet after a hard days work. Materials vary from cotton to leather to sheepskin. As such ,there are a variety for just about anyone on the market. In the west, they are typically used during winter or in regions where the weather is consistently cold. Wrapping your feet up with a nice pair of ladies slippers can stave off the biting cold of winter. The most common form of slippers are slip-ons. Slip-ons usually cover the toes completely and are thin soled. The rest of the foot including the heel is exposed.
They were designed for indoor use and are very easy to use and walk in. Not recommended for a day out with the girls. The next type is fun and somewhat quirky, novelty slippers. They are usually modeled after popular cartoon or comic characters. For that reason, it isn't too hard to find novelty slippers modeled after Spongebob, Batman, Spiderman and even X-men. Some of the most popular varieties are animal novelty slippers. These types are strictly for indoor use. Another variant you may want to consider is sandal slippers. Depending on where you live, they may also be called Birkenstocks.
These slippers are usually cushioned. For a rustic feel that has its roots in the ancient world of Native Americans and European huntsmen, Moccasin slippers are a great alternative. Unlike the vast majority of ladies slippers, Moccasin varieties are easily used outdoors. They are almost always brown and are made from either leather or deer hide. They were traditionally meant for the outdoors and had soles of varying rigidity depending on the environment. Western Native Americans used hard soled moccasins while those that lived in the forests had softer soles.
Ugg slippers are famous in two countries, New Zealand and Australia. There are produced from Sheepskin and come in a variety of colors. Overall, all types of slippers help protect the foot from dirt and may also protect from injuries due to the bulky nature of some of the variants. However, the reverse can also be true as some slippers (particularly novelty) may be unwieldy and difficult to walk in. Additionally, they can be dangerous across slippery surfaces.
Lastly, the term "slippers" have a different meaning in some Asian countries. In those regions, the term is used for flip-flops. They area very common item as they are cheap, comfortable and are a great way of dealing with the humidity and heat. However, they are strictly casual wear and are never worn for special occasions or functions. They are considered street wear in South East Asia.
